42 Movie Review

 By Morgan Howard

After watching “42: The Jackie Robinson Story,” it is easy to see why the movie was a hit with viewers.

“42” tells the story of Jackson “Jackie” Robinson’s journey as the first African American Major League Baseball player. Chadwick Boseman, who stars as Robinson, makes the character believable and brought to life Robinson’s commitment to striving in the sport he loved.

The movie focus on not only how Robinson handled the disrespect and criticism he faced, but also on the people who supported and helped him through it. Particularly the Dodgers owner, Branch Rickey; played by the legendary Harrison Ford.

What makes “42” such an inspirational film, is how accurately it captures the beginning of Robinson’s career in Major League Baseball. Dramatic scenes, such as Robinson’s breakdown when faced by cruel remarks from Philly manager during a game and the awkwardness between Robinson and his teammates in the beginning of the season, really sheds light on much he had to overcome.

“To them you’re a hero,” said Mr. Brock, whose home Robinson stayed in during time he spent in Florida.  The movie illustrates that Robinson was an inspiration to the African-American community, especially young boys. The movie “42” shows Robinson’s determination and ultimately captures his legacy. Robison proved that with hard work and strengthening talents, barriers can and will be broken.
